A summer in Janicki’s automation shop, on the electrical side of a large composite test system.

I built, wired, and QC-tested 50+ subsystems, working to industrial build-quality and wire-management standards — the kind where a harness is expected to be serviceable by someone who has never seen it before, five years from now.

What the standards actually mean

Wire management reads like cosmetics until you’ve had to debug a system built without it. Consistent routing, labelling, strain relief, and bend radius are what make a fault findable. On a test system with dozens of subsystems, the difference between a good harness and a working-but-messy one is measured in hours per fault, permanently.

QC-testing my own work also changed how I built it. Knowing that I’d be the one continuity-testing a subsystem an hour later is a fast way to learn to do it right the first time.

Why it mattered later

This is the internship that got me onto Janicki’s Physical AI team the following summer. It’s also the reason the robotics work has a hardware floor under it: I’d already spent a summer on the shop side of the wall, where the tolerance for a design that’s clever but unbuildable is zero.
